Pages

Aberrant Ceramics is the artwork of Aaron Nosheny,
potter and ceramic artist based in Tucson, Arizona. Self-taught and neurodivergent, he has worked in the medium of stoneware clay for 21 years, developing a practice rooted in literal construction and obsessive repetition. He makes non-traditional ceramics in a medium built on tradition, exploring the overlap between wonder and revulsion. Subject matter includes sympathetic monsters, insects, opossums, fast food mascots, and Halloween kitsch.

I am in love with my medium. I love the process of frantically birthing clay monstrosities, subjecting them to an epic trial by fire, and sending them out into the world.

Skull Chair / Ceramic Bone Throne Sculpture

Ceramic skull chair sculpture (“Bone Throne”) by Aberrant Ceramics.

This ceramic skull chair sculpture is a handmade “bone throne” that reimagines the human cranium as macabre furniture.
Highly detailed yet eerie and primitive, it features reaching skeletal hands as armrests and a ribbed lower jaw that forms a hollowed-out seat.

The Origin Story
This design is a modern ceramic evolution of a piece of my own history. It is based on a large plywood skull my father created for our family’s basement haunted house in 1984. I've included an image of the original in the photos. The tradition was to invite the whole neighborhood to tour our haunted basement. This piece is also inspired by vintage Halloween decorations. I loved the distorted, non-anatomically correct skull imagery in these decorations and that pleasing distortion is also reflected in this piece.

The forehead and temples are covered in intricate, hand-carved scrolled patterns that bridge the gap between biology and architecture. Glazed with stark but glossy black and white glazes.

While a standalone art piece, it serves as a perfect "Bone Throne" for small figures, dolls, or as the centerpiece of a curated cabinet of curiosities.

My family's Halloween decorations circa 1984-1985. I love non-anatomically-correct skull illustrations on Halloween decorations.

Mission Statement

By sending my Skull Chair to its forever home, I want to send out encouragement to the spooky peoples of the world. I want to encourage the weird kids to create. I want to encourage the building of DIY family haunted houses. I want to break the stronhold of mass produced T*mu/W*lmart/Ama*on "art" and to encourage the creation of handmade art. I want to encourage the expanded and enlightened use of the ceramic medium to produce a variety of forms unhindered by tradition. I want to bring spooky joy to people's living spaces. I want to bring the unique DIY spirit of the Nosheny basement haunted house to everyone who needs it.
