Pages

Aberrant Ceramics is the artwork of Aaron Nosheny,
ceramic artist and potter in Tucson, Arizona.

I work in the medium of stoneware clay and make hand-built pottery, sculpture, hamsas, ornaments, masks, and a variety of other forms.

I’m a self-taught autistic artist working in my medium for over twenty years. I like monsters, insects, weird animals, body horror, folk horror, horror comedy, horror in general, Halloween decorations, fast food mascots, kitsch – all of these creep into my work, but there’s really no overarching theme.

I am in love with my medium. I love the process of frantically birthing clay monstrosities, subjecting them to an epic trial by fire, and sending them out into the world.

Doll Face Atavism

I recycled spare doll face molds from the Baby Eater Pot in this way:

Scrap Atavisms

I hate dumping clay leftovers in the slip bucket. After a certain point, the clay is unworkable, but sometimes I prefer producing crude non-sculptures such as the objects below to giving it up to be recycled by the studio.

Halloween Atavisms

Sometimes clay leftovers are too interesting to dump in the slip bucket.

Bride Atavism

The most atavistic of this round of atavisms, the head is made from a mold of a Halloween candle of the Bride of Frankenstein.

Doll Atavism

The face comes from a thrift store wooden statue that looks African to me. I have no idea where it comes from or if it's meant to represent any particular continent, race, or ethnicity.

Marge-Bossk Atavism

To celebrate my country's independence a few days early, here is the Marge-Bossk Atavism, an effigy of the Trandoshan bounty hunter with hair worn only for shock value.

Seju, Zesty, and the Saga of Temmoku Gold

These are still atavisms with their original names, not names that I altered to sound less stupid.

For Seju, I used a glaze called Temmoku Gold. In its first mix, seen here, it was black with gold flecks. The next time it was mixed, it came out a sparkly gold color which I also used extensively. The third mix came out a matte gold which I never bothered to use. Unfortunately, the entities responsible for mixing glazes at Tucson Clay Coop have not been able to recreate either of the first two interesting versions of Temmoku Gold.

Zesty has the letters Z - E - S - T - Y imprinted on the points of its base because it's fun to play with letter stamps.

Snout and Twood

I went to the pottery studio hoping for finished work, but it's still in the kiln. Here are two more atavisms, but I realized I'm fast approaching the point that I'm going to be too embarrassed by the names I gave these objects to post them.

Ok, I admit it. They all have names.

Plumly and Blue Lucefuge

These are two more atavism sculptures. Some of them have names.

Plumly, named for the reddish glaze called Plum.

New Atavism

This is a small, simple clay object inspired by the Mario games in which everything has a face on it. I'm still playing through Super Mario Galaxy after almost two years. Right now I'm stuck on the Cosmic Forest Race star, in which the player must race a shadowy anti-Mario entity through a difficult landscape. I have many, many similar atavistic sculptures similarly inspired that I'm going to be posting until my new work gets finished.

Halloween Decoration 3

The last of the Halloween decoration objects for now. I don't remember where the mold for the face came from. The hands are once again from Jabba the Hutt's Quarren accountant known as Tessek by name, or pejoratively as Squid Head.

And here are all three Halloween objects in case you missed them the first time.

Halloween Decoration 2

The face on this piece is made from a very creepy plastic Christmas decoration of three soulless child-zombies singing hymns from the Necronomicon.

Halloween Decoration 1

The skull mold is from a Halloween nightlight. The spiral top is from a Bride of Frankenstein candle. The arms are from a mold of a piece of coral.
