Tiger Column

This sculpture is the head of a jawless tiger set atop a column.  Part of it was glazed and part is painted with orange acrylic paint.

Black and White Column

This is a column sculpture with a primitive sculpted face.

Clown Column

This is an old piece from 2009.  It consists of a clown head on top of a series of nested cups.  The clown is from a Simpsons episode.  It's based on Bart's clown bed in "Lisa's First Word."

Old Cat Column

This is probably from 2007 or 2008.  It's one in a series of column sculptures originally modeled on Lewis Carroll characters.  The cats became less and less cat-like and this was one of the later ones.

Five Cat Column

This is a leaning column of five monstrous cat heads.  I was thinking of calling it the 5cat Column, to be pronounced "Scat Column."

Brain Column

I used to make a lot of "column sculptures," consisting of a sculpted head attached to a column made of nested clay cups.  This piece was an experiment to see if I was still capable of making column sculptures.  I intended to make a cat column and ended up with this monstrosity.

Warthog Column 4

This is Warthog Column 4, made to replace the one that was damaged by some random monster child at the studio. The glazes are Warren's Green and Ragnar's Black over Stony Gray.

Sleestak Column

The Sleestak are a species of reptilian/insectoid humanoid beings from the classic seventies Saturday morning TV show Land of the Lost. Land of the Lost involves the adventures of a family of three modern-day (that is, seventies modern-day) human beings trapped in a loop of space-time also occupied by various beings from diverse locations and eras. The Sleestak are brutal and primitive although they are descended from a civilized and highly evolved race.












I like the visceral effect of leaving the back open.

Talz Column

This object cracked in the kiln, but I glued it back together. I had been planning to use the Queens glaze, which is a very light yellowish color with brown highlights. The glue would not have held in the glaze kiln so I painted it instead and some of the hair detail was lost.

I saw an action figure of Talz Jedi Foul Moudama from the Clone Wars TV cartoon and it looks much fluffier and rounder than what I'm producing. I don't think the Talz should be portrayed as mammals.




The day eyes are at least in the same plane as the night eyes in this figure, but I think they're still too small.

Zuckuss Column

The Zuckuss Column has been sitting on my shelf for a few months. It lost a chunk out of the column. I used a mysterious substance called Magic Slip to attempt to reattach it, but it was unsuccessful, so I glazed it anyway with the piece missing.

Zuckuss is a character from the famous bounty hunter scene in The Empire Strikes Back. He is from the planet Gand and his species is also known as the Gand. He can be seen for a few seconds standing with his fellow bounty hunters, including his droid partner 4-LOM, and Darth Vader.

Triangularly Prismatic Cat Column

The cat's head is open at the back and there is a cluster of small skulls surrounding the pink orifice and leading down the ridge of the column.

Warthog Column 3

I like the Nutmeg glaze on the face. The Plum on the ears was probably a mistake.

Cat Column With Detachable Head

I made this cat column a while ago, but it lost an ear and spent about a year bisqued but not glazed on my shelf. I'm trying to clear some space on the shelf, so I finally glazed it, but the head came off while I was dipping it in Warren's Green glaze. Here are the two separate pieces:

Small Cat Column

The cat columns eventually became less than cat-like. I think this one looks more like a rabid pika or a bat.



It's currently doing a shit job of guarding the dill seedlings.

Hatta Column

I'm out of new work again, but not for long. From the archives, this is part of a series of column sculptures based on Lewis Carroll characters. This is the Hatter. I'm not sure why the nose looks like the Froot Loops mascot's bill.
